Though the pacific northwest was melting under record heat at the end there, the rest of June showed off some pretty hot moves of its own in the field of cannabis. Two supreme courts weighed in on legality, two US states signed recreational into law, and a study on increased car accident rates in legalized states showed some mixed results. Let’s dive in.
Justice Clarence Thomas, one of the most reliably right-wing judges on the court, has publicly stated that federal cannabis prohibition no longer makes sense in its current state. According to Justice Thomas:
Given that this is coming from a far right-wing justice who has shown no support of cannabis legalization before, on a court that is 6-3 conservative, we’ll have to wait and see whether this represents a movement on the supreme court towards federal legalization, or whether Justice Thomas simply wishes for an updated federal prohibition law.
In a move that should have already been done by one of Mexico’s northern neighbors (Hint: it’s not Canada), recreational cannabis was nationally decriminalized in Mexico. Surprisingly, the popularly supported decriminalization was done by Mexico’s supreme court. After the Mexican congress and senate failed three times to pass a bill, blowing past the supreme court-mandated deadline of April 30th without even an explanation, the judicial body ruled that prohibiting personal use of cannabis was unconstitutional.
As the law now stands, the government can issue permits for personal use of marijuana and for growing a small number of plants indoors to anyone over the age of 18 who applies. Previously Mexican citizens required a court injunction to be allowed to consume or grow. The sale and commercial growing of marijuana will remain illegal until the senate and congress can come to an agreement on federal legalization.
For the first time in this iconic southwest desert state, consumers will be buying something small, popular, and green that isn’t turquoise. New Mexico’s Cannabis Regulation Act officially went into effect on June 29th. While state regulators still have plenty of work ahead of them agreeing on regulations, permits, and other details, personal use is now fully legal and anyone carrying up to two ounces of marijuana on their person is just following the law.
Any more than that, up to eight ounces, sixteen grams of concentrate, or eight hundred milligrams of edibles, and you’re facing a misdemeanor. You can also grow up to a dozen plants for personal use and police are no longer able to stop and search you if they smell weed (as long as you’re not driving). Recreational sales are expected to begin on April 1st, 2022. Check out our New Mexico page for more information.
That silent second “c” in Connecticut now stands for cannabis in this small northeastern state as Governor Ned Lamont made it the nineteenth US state to legalize recreational cannabis. Much like in New Mexico, starting July 1st cannabis consumers can legally light up or chow down without legal repercussions. The personal possession limit is 1.5oz of flower, but up to 5oz is allowed in your home or in your glove box as long as it’s locked up.
There are also racial and social justice measures written into the law, which is a welcome standard for new legalization bills (that still doesn’t go far enough to address the harmful societal legacy of the drug war.) Half of all licenses will go to equity applicants, including those disproportionately impacted by police enforcement and high unemployment. Up to 75% of revenue is also earmarked towards equity efforts and community reinvestment. Recreational sales are expected to begin in the summer of 2022.
According to two new studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the affiliated Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), crash rates rose by about 6% in California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington after those states legalized.
However, the details of this study paint a more complex picture. A separate study done by the IIHS also showed little difference in the car crash rates of drivers who consumed only marijuana and those that hadn’t. While there was a 5-6% increase in injuries from car crashes over states that had not legalized, another IIHS study of emergency room patients in legalized states showed that marijuana use only led to increased crash risk when combined with alcohol.
Other factors that may account for the increase are that more cannabis users may be driving longer distances to dispensaries, putting them at more risk of a crash the longer they are in the car.
Needless to say, more research needs to be done to discover whether this is correlation or causation. Also, needless to say, if you are intoxicated with any drug, please don’t drive. You’re not only putting yourself and your finances at risk but everyone else on the road as well.
Legalization seemed to be the story of June, as it will be until cannabis prohibition is federally repealed. One supreme court justice is pointing out that this system makes no sense and another country’s supreme court is tired of the slow walk to decriminalization. The citizens of two states can rejoice in the fact that while recreational shops won’t be open until 2022, the fear of unjust legal punishment over cannabis possession is gone. Finally, another study is out showing that just because marijuana is legal, it doesn’t mean you should give up your responsibility to everyone else out on the road. While driving under the influence of marijuana isn’t nearly as dangerous as driving while drunk, it’s still not worth the risk to everyone involved. Consume responsibly.

Some of the most popular terms within the cannabis world are indica and sativa. They are unavoidable when purchasing cannabis or when talking to someone who smokes weed regularly. As cannabis legitimizes across the country, industry experts have started to question the validity of these terms. Are they still relevant?

The terms indica and sativa are used to describe the effects of a particular strain of cannabis. Indica strains denote a more mellow experience, while sativas are meant to leave users energized and creative. For plant growers, the terms indica and sativa are meant to distinguish the way the plant looks. Indica leaves are broader, sativas are taller, with narrow leaves.

“‘Indica’ and ‘sativa’ were used to distinguish between cannabis varieties based on physical characteristics,” Jeff Chen, founder of UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative, told Insider. “But at some point, popular culture began attaching distinctions in the effects from consumption of indica versus sativa, despite no evidence of this.”

While your budtender or friend may advocate for a particular strain, the reality is that it’s all dependent on the batch itself and on the effect it has on you. Depending on the type of cannabis, an indica strain might be more energizing than a sativa and vice versa.

Nowadays, the lines between sativas and indicas are incredibly blurred, to a degree where experts call these labels “meaningless.” Over the years, cannabis has been extensively crossbred, resulting in cannabis plants that have parts of both indica and sativa strains. Another influencing factor is the environment where the plant is grown; things like sunlight, temperature, and humidity are big contributors. The same strain might be different when grown in Colorado than when grown in California.

No matter the genetics of the plant, cannabis interacts with our bodies in very complex ways. It’s why a friend might experience a completely different reaction from the same batch of cannabis as you do.

Contemporary data on cannabis shows how important terpenes are, which might provide better orientation when choosing a strain or marketing its effects. Not only are they responsible for providing taste and aroma, they also support and influence the effects of other cannabis compounds, playing an important part in cannabis’ entourage effect.

Cannabis remains mysterious and more research is needed in order to market it better and develop a better understanding of its effect on our bodies.

While the hype is always chasing the next big strain, newer doesn’t always mean better. It’s something that many younger cannabis growers who have only ever known a ‘developed’ cannabis industry, complete with its myriad of solutions – from plant care to growing technology to a conveyor belt of new strains – are starting to realize. The thing is, classic cannabis strains are called ‘classic’ for good reason. They had what it took to stand out in the crowd when they were first released and they have stood the test of time ever since!

Paradise Seeds has been around since the mid-nineties and is one of the most decorated seed companies in Europe with many cannabis cups and awards accumulated over the years. Paradise’s strain library contains over 40 strains and features sativa, indica, hybrid, autoflower and CBD Rich/High varieties. Popular strains include Nebula, Delahaze, Wappa, El Dorado Gold, L.A. Amnesia and Auto Kong ll (from Paradise’s hugely successful collaboration with Tommy Chong) and CBDRelax and CBDream from the company’s new CBD range.

The company was set up by cannabis breeder, Luc Krol, who is still very much involved with the breeding process at Paradise. He began growing in the 1980s and honed his skills in Amsterdam in the early 1990s after moving to the Dutch capital where he was involved in the vibrant ‘squat scene’ which thrived amongst the many vacant old buildings in the city.

At that time, Amsterdam was a hub for the international cannabis community, a happy stopover for Europeans and North Americans traveling to exotic parts of the world. In the city’s coffee shops travelers exchanged seeds picked up from popular landrace destinations, such as India, Thailand, Africa, and South America.

Ed Rosenthal And Luc Krol Go Way Back!

An avid seed collector, Luc soon began experimenting with growing and then breeding, taking advantage of whole floor spaces and rooftops of squatted buildings. Luc remembers these days fondly. “I bought Ed Rosenthal’s first book that he wrote together with Mel Franks, the Marijuana Growers Insider’s Guide. He inspired me to continue growing cannabis and I learned a lot from his book and later other books on growing.

A few years later, I met Ed at the High Times Cup – I think it was in 1997 or 1998 – and we have seen each other on many occasions since. We smoked a nice pure joint together of one of the varieties I was working on  (I think it was Nebula, which went on to win many awards) and we naturally had a good time. He was really encouraging of my work, which meant a lot to me so early on in my breeding career. This made it even more special when he was the one handing me over an award at a HighLife Cannabis Cup sometime later!

At Paradise, we think of Ed very highly for his contribution to the battle for cannabis legalization. He is inspirational on so many levels – as an advocate for the right to grow your own cannabis plants for self-sufficiency and of course in terms of his sacrifices for the cause. In the 2000s, we followed his court case very closely and did what we could, providing moral and some financial support. It’s very important that those who are now profiting from legalized cannabis, appreciate the contribution – and sacrifice – that advocates like Ed made to get to this point.”

Paradise Seeds Classic Strains: Sensi Star, Dutch Dragon, Wappa

While Ed was battling the Federal authorities in the USA in the 2000s, Amsterdam was still playing a central role in the world of cannabis as a safe space for weed and hash consumers to savor their passion in a tolerant surrounding. The early years of the new century also saw Paradise Seeds strains such as Belladonna, Dutch Dragon, Spoetnik #1, and Sensi Star become popular around the world.

Perhaps the most famous of Paradise’s classic strains is Sensi Star (90% Indica). It was once described as the ‘the strongest Indica you will encounter’ Sensi Star still upholds a reputation for extreme potency over 20 years since it was released. It has multiple cannabis cups to its name, including a supreme double in the form of both High Times and HighLife cannabis cups in the same year (1999). Over the years it has sired 50+ direct descendants, including Bio-Diesel, Stevie Wonder, and Death Star.

Its tremendous oil production makes it a favorite for hash producers (even in the heart of Morocco’s traditional hash producing regions). In the grow room it “smells like victory”, laughs Luc. Early flowering produces a distinctive metal smell that turns lemony at the end. “Her bouquet is strong and at the same time fresh – like mint, metal and oxygen combined. And she is so strong, even after all these years she packs a punch that can compete with the strongest strains out there. ”

Dutch Dragon is a fiery Sativa (75%) and the origins of this Paradise classic go all the way back to 1994 when the company first began. It’s a plant that loves warmer climates and is renowned for its incredible growth, which has produced plants of up to 3meters (almost 10ft) in height.

“This was one of the first strains we developed as a company,” explains Luc, “and still remains a Sativa favorite with connoisseurs because it is an unpretentious plant which grows long and resinous buds that have a lovely subtly citrus taste – more tangerines than lemons!  It’s a wonderful effect, a really thrilling, soaring ride, like flying on top of dragon wings!”

By the end of the decade, Paradise had added another classic strain to the list, in the form of a plant that continues to be one of the company’s most popular varieties – Wappa.  Luc describes this 60/40 Indica/Sativa with Sweet Skunk running through its core as a ‘near-perfect hybrid’.

Wappa

Wappa

“Strains like Sensi Star provide something unique and beautiful – like the frosting on top of a cake. Wappa is no such fancy plant, but this plant would be the essential ingredient that makes you the perfect cake!” Once harvested and cured, Wappa is notable for its strong but uplifting effect, bringing relaxation for body and mind alike, which also makes it a popular medical strain.

“I remember walking into a party with a bag of Wappa soon after it was released, “ says Luc. “It was such a lovely scent, so sweet, so fruity, and everybody just kind of stopped what they were doing and started to sniff the air. It was as if the fragrance lifted the atmosphere of the whole room. I remember thinking at the time, ‘oh yeah, that’s the Wappa effect!’.

Silicone pieces haven’t gotten their due in the cannabis world. Although, that’s understandable. Let’s be honest, they haven’t been doing themselves any favors. Besides their basic design, many of them are so cartoonishly colored that they look like something a circus clown smokes out of after a long day under the big top.

Glass pieces, on the other hand, need no one to hype up their appeal. With their various colors and elaborate designs, not to mention the artistry it takes to create them, a well crafted glass piece is either going to be a smoke sesh local fave or a conversation piece. But let’s take another look at silicone smoking pieces. While they may not be flashy, they are the jeeps of the smoking apparatus world: rugged, durable, and dependable. Nobody would argue that a Jeep is going to bump a Bugatti or Maseratii off of a showroom’s main platform, but neither luxury vehicle is going to get very far up a pitted logging road. In that same vein, silicone pieces serve a purpose that few glass pieces can.

Let’s take a look at why you might want to consider a silicone piece.
No matter how ornate a glass piece is, it goes from an admired show piece to trash can occupant the second it drops onto hard ground or collides with a denser object. Silicone, on the other hand, can literally bounce back from a lot more abuse. This makes silicone pieces a great choice for the chronically clumsy, as well as any cannabis user struggling with mobility issues. Silicone pieces are also not going to chip or crack when being jostled in a backpack, which makes them ideal for those who enjoy a little toke on their bike commute, hike, or backpacking trip. After all, you’re not going to risk your favorite glass bubbler or bong on a hiking trip just for the joy of using it around the campsite. But a silicone bubbler will give you reliable, deep, percolating rips after you pitch your tent at your destination (be sure to use filtered water).

Silicone pieces are far easier to clean than glass, which means enjoying a cleaner, easier pull with much less effort. Once you remove the bowl from a silicone piece, you can slide whatever cleaning utensils you use into the body without needing to wedge, bend, or angle your swab. In fact, it’s much easier to just bend the pipe body itself to get blockages out of any hard-to-reach places.

Beyond that, silicone surfaces are also non-stick. This makes them a far more convenient choice for dab rigs, concentrate pipes, and nectar collectors.

There’s a lot that goes into creating a glass pipe, bong, or dab rig. The cost of that material and labor comes down to you. Silicone pipes, on the other hand, are cheap to create and durable. This means that you will be paying less for a product that is almost certain to last longer.

Manufacturers have been working hard to create silicone cannabis pieces that up the cannabis smoking game. That’s why PotGuide is here with some of the best silicone smoking pieces to add into your rotation.

The Ice Spoon by Waxmaid gives you everything you want in a silicone pipe. The design is basic but still sleek. It’s made of lightweight, platinum cured silicone that will hold up over time. The Ice Spoon is very affordable and comes in your choice of six colors. Its wide bowl design allows you to pack a “friend sized” bowl that will remain cherried for multiple rounds without needing to be cashed. There are plenty of comparable pipes out there, but we’re picking the Ice Spoon over the competition for its hollow design that allows for freezing water at the bottom. Doing this in a glass pipe always risks splintering the glass from the temperature change. The Ice Spoon, on the other hand, gives you the option of an extra cool, icy hit that is very welcome as thermometers rise over the summer.
Price: $12.99

The Hammer by Eyce boasts an platinum-cured silicone body for extra durability that comes in your choice of eight color designs. The bubbler’s large borosilicate glass bowl snaps in tight and pops out for easy cleaning. However, what puts the Hammer above the usual silicone bubblers is its swiss-army knife of features. The base contains a hidden storage area for any flower you’re bringing along and a tool holder for the included steel poker. The water chamber can also be converted to an ice chamber, which means a pocket of built-in ice for an extra-chilly smoke sesh.
With the purchase of an extra 10mm glass collar and titanium nail, the Hammer can also be converted into a portable dab rig.
Price: $39.99

The Kali by Piecemaker may look basic (and kind of like a beaker designed by a muppet), but that is this bong’s strength. It’s not going to provoke any “oohs” or “ahhs” from your friends if you pull it out to use in your living room. However, if you pull it out from your backpack after a long day of hiking, your friends will be plenty impressed. All the extras in this piece are equally strong. The bong boasts a contoured mouth piece for comfort and a stainless steel bowl piece with a matching carb cap. The downstem is engineered with Piecemaker’s patented Hi-Tek high perc technology to double the bubbles on each rip. Even if your backpack takes a tumble down the mountainside, this virtually indestructible bong will still be in one piece when you pull it out at the end of the day.
Price: $50

Creating a quality silicone dab rig can be a challenge, especially if you’re trying to offer both high and low temp dab options. Eyce created just such a rig, then asked “why stop there?” The Eyce Rig 2.0 body and stem cap is made out of their standard platinum-cured silicone, but it’s the rig’s design that really sets it apart. A 10mm glass collar acts as a heat barrier, protecting the silicone body from whatever flame you want to throw at the titanium nail. Reinforced chamber walls provide extra stability to the body and stem cap. Outside of that, the Eyce Rig 2.0 includes a built-in concentrate container and four tool slots for a true all-in-one, on-the-go dab rig.
Price: $49.99

Despite their second-fiddle reputation, silicone smoking pieces have their place in the cannabis consumer’s arsenal. They’ll never replace glass as the light of the smoker’s eye, but much like a Jeep vs. a Ferrari, silicone pieces can go places that glass pieces can’t. If you enjoy an active lifestyle, or have a tendency for your pieces to tumble out of your hands, a silicone smoking piece can make an excellent addition to your collection of pipes, bubblers, bongs, or dab rigs.
